Sikorsky Unveils Modular Kits for UH-60 Black Hawk, Enhancing Versatility for Armed and Transport Missions

Sikorsky has announced the launch of modular kits designed for the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, enhancing its ability to transition quickly between transport and armed roles while utilizing the same airframe. This innovative approach allows operators to effortlessly switch mission profiles, adding a variety of weapons—including rockets, guns, and guided munitions—without compromising the helicopter’s fundamental utility functions.

Operators can complete the reconfiguration process in as little as three hours, significantly broadening the aircraft’s operational capabilities. The Black Hawk can effectively undertake diverse missions, including air assault, close air support, medical evacuation, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and tactical lift.

The new kits are available in two distinct variants, tailored for close support and precision strike roles. Sikorsky’s Vice President and General Manager, Rich Benton, emphasized the versatility of the Armed Black Hawk, stating that the modifications provide warfighters with a single, adaptable, and combat-proven platform. This feature allows ground units to swiftly exchange the commercially-produced kits, which is crucial for maintaining high mission readiness.

During the recent Army Aviation Warfighting Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, Sikorsky showcased a model of the Armed Kit, which provides the aircraft with the capability to utilize up to six weapon stations. This includes the installation of two 7.62mm machine guns in the cabin windows, GAU-19 .50-caliber three-barrel Gatling guns mounted on gun pods, and 19-tube rocket launchers. Additionally, the Black Hawk can be outfitted with precision-guided munitions and has provisions for air-launched effects canisters on inner hardpoints, as well as a mixed loadout of advanced guided missiles, such as the AGM-114 Hellfire, AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), and Spike NLOS.

The kits are accessible through foreign military sales and direct commercial sales, making them adaptable for integration within allied defense fleets at a global scale. Sikorsky has partnered with Lockheed Martin-affiliated facilities, including PZL Mielec in Poland, to provide installation support for these upgrades.

These new kits are the product of years of operational experience gained from supporting armed Black Hawk fleets in the Middle East. Sikorsky has indicated that the Black Hawk will continue to evolve with advancements in engine upgrades, digital integration, and increasing autonomy, all aimed at enhancing safety and operational efficiency. The platform is predicted to remain a key medium-lift asset, with its service life expected to extend beyond 2070, underscoring its enduring relevance in modern military operations.
