Smt. Alka Nangia Arora, a seasoned civil servant and a 1991-batch officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), has officially taken charge as the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) on 1 August 2026. This significant role places her at the helm of the Department of Defence Accounts, an essential entity responsible for overseeing the financial and accounting frameworks of the Ministry of Defence.
With over three decades of experience in public finance and administration, Smt. Arora has built a distinguished career serving in various ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), and the Ministry of Textiles. Her contributions have been instrumental in shaping policy formulation, financial management, and governance reforms across these sectors.
During her tenure in the Indian Defence Accounts Service, Smt. Arora has been pivotal in enhancing financial accountability and improving the defence procurement processes. Her efforts have been directed toward ongoing reforms aimed at increasing efficiency within India’s defence financial ecosystem. Her expertise encompasses a wide range of areas such as budgeting, expenditure management, audit functions, financial advisory, and institutional reforms, making her a well-rounded leader in public finance.
In her new position as CGDA, Smt. Arora will lead the Department of Defence Accounts, which operates under the Ministry of Defence. This department is responsible for providing vital financial advice, maintaining defence accounts, processing salaries and pensions for both active and retired personnel, conducting internal audits, and ensuring comprehensive oversight of defence expenditures.
