Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi recently attended a memorial ceremony honoring Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, a revered figure from the Kargil War, at the prestigious Manekshaw Auditorium. The event saw participation from senior military leaders, veterans, and active soldiers, all coming together to pay their respects to the late Colonel, who passed away on April 10 due to a heart attack at the age of 61. Col Wangchuk, affectionately known as the “Lion of Ladakh,” was celebrated for his extraordinary valor and leadership during one of India’s significant military engagements.
Reverberating through the auditorium was the traditional Ladakhi war cry “Ki Ki So So Lhargyalo,” which signifies bravery and victory, connecting the attendees to the spirit of Col Wangchuk’s legacy. The presence of General Dwivedi highlighted the profound camaraderie within the Army, as many recalled their personal connections with Col Wangchuk, who was known to engage with soldiers during his visits to Ladakh.
During the 1999 Kargil conflict, then-Major Wangchuk spearheaded a crucial mission to capture the strategically important Chorbat La feature. In the face of intense enemy fire and extreme high-altitude conditions, his counter-ambush strategy proved pivotal in securing the objective, significantly altering the course of the battle in that sector. His valor during this critical operation earned him the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime gallantry honor.
Tributes to Col Wangchuk have been pouring in from various quarters. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded him as a “highly decorated officer known for his gallantry, resolute leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty,” emphasizing his stature as a “proud son of Ladakh.” Additionally, the Indian Army commemorated him as a committed leader and a stalwart representation of courage and service.
Born in Leh in 1964, Col Wangchuk started his military career with the Assam Regiment before joining the Ladakh Scouts. Even after his retirement, he maintained a strong bond with his unit, continuing to inspire countless soldiers with his dedication and service. His life and contributions are a lasting testament to the highest ideals of the Indian Army, crafting a legacy characterized by courage, leadership, and an unwavering sense of patriotism.
