Two Indian Army personnel sustained injuries in a landmine explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. The incident occurred in the Upper Garh Forward Post area during routine operational duties conducted by troops of the 8 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), a unit under the 12 Infantry Brigade.
According to military officials, the explosion took place while the soldiers were on a regular patrol close to the LoC. The injured personnel, identified as Havildar Vijay Kumar and Naik Sharanapa Angari, were promptly evacuated by their fellow troops and subsequently airlifted to the Army’s Base Hospital at Badamibagh in Srinagar for further medical attention. Reports indicate that both soldiers are currently in stable condition and receiving the necessary care.
The circumstances leading to the explosion remain under investigation, although preliminary assessments suggest that it may have been triggered by an old anti-personnel landmine. Such devices can inadvertently detonate during patrolling activities. However, definitive conclusions regarding the cause are pending completion of the inquiry.
Military officials highlighted that the likelihood of such incidents increases during the monsoon season due to heavy rainfall and consequent soil erosion, especially in the mountainous terrain along the LoC. Factors such as continuous rainfall, water runoff, and landslides can displace landmines from their original locations, thus creating new hazards for both security personnel and local civilians.
The LoC, which traverses challenging mountainous areas, encompasses several mined regions historically used as defensive barriers against infiltration attempts. Despite ongoing maintenance and detailed mapping of minefields, environmental changes can sometimes lead to the repositioning of these dangerous devices, necessitating regular sanitization and surveillance operations.
In the aftermath of the explosion, the Indian Army commenced an area sanitization and search operation to secure the site. Bomb disposal and engineering teams have been deployed to inspect the surrounding area for any additional explosives and to ensure the safety of troops operating nearby. This operation aims to identify and neutralize any further threats, such as displaced landmines or unexploded ordnance.
