UK Ministry of Defence to Award Heckler & Koch £70 Million Contract for L7A2 Machine Guns

The UK Ministry of Defence is preparing to finalize a ten-year contract with Heckler & Koch (H&K) for the provision of L7A2 general-purpose machine guns (GPMG) and associated equipment for the British Armed Forces. This sole-source contract, valued at £70 million (approximately $94 million), is anticipated to be signed in June 2026 and will remain active until June 2036.

According to a UK government transparency notice referenced in reports, H&K has previously executed mid-life modifications on the L7A2, which was originally designed by the Belgian firm FN Herstal. These modifications have significantly altered the weapon from its original specifications, leading to the assertion that only H&K UK possesses the technical documentation necessary for the ongoing supply of the GPMG system in its L7A2 configuration.

The notice specified that the upgraded L7A2 incorporates several safety-critical modifications, though specific details about these enhancements have not been disclosed.

The L7A2 is essentially a British variant of the FN MAG, a robust 7.62×51mm belt-fed machine gun known for its versatility in both light and sustained-fire roles. In its sustained-fire configuration, the L7A2 can be mounted on a tripod, equipped with a C2 optical sight, and is operated by a two-person crew. This configuration is capable of delivering an impressive rate of fire, reaching up to 750 rounds per minute with effective ranges extending up to 1,800 meters (approximately 5,906 feet).

When utilized as a light machine gun, the L7A2 features a fold-out bipod and boasts an effective range of around 800 meters (about 2,625 feet). Variants of this weapon system are also integrated into various British Army vehicles and helicopter platforms, underlining its essential role within the UK’s military operations.
