US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink confirmed the existence of an “on-orbit” weapon, stating that the capability was considered necessary to protect American forces from potential hostile actions.
Speaking at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference, Meink said that the United States was prepared to respond to evolving threats in space. However, he did not provide details about the weapon’s specific capabilities or reveal when it was placed into orbit.
Growing Military Competition in Space
The US announcement comes amid increasing concerns over the development of military space capabilities by major powers. American military officials have previously warned about programmes in Russia and China that could potentially interfere with, disrupt or attack US satellites during a future conflict.
Satellites play a critical role in modern military operations. They support secure communications, surveillance, reconnaissance, navigation and other strategic functions. Consequently, protecting space-based assets has become an increasingly important component of national security.
The development of offensive capabilities in space also raises concerns about the possibility of a wider space arms race, as countries seek ways to protect their own satellites while developing capabilities to disable or neutralise those of potential adversaries.
Link with the Golden Dome Defence System
Space-based military capabilities are also connected with the Trump administration’s proposed “Golden Dome” defence system. The administration has described space-based systems and interceptor missiles as important elements of its planned architecture for protecting the United States against missiles and other airborne threats.
The strategy reflects a broader shift towards integrating space-based capabilities into national missile defence and military operations.
Outer Space Treaty and Space Weapons
The legal framework governing military activities in space dates back to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The treaty prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction in orbit around Earth and restricts certain military activities in outer space.
However, the treaty does not impose a blanket ban on every type of conventional space weapon. As a result, major powers such as the United States, Russia and China have continued to develop capabilities that can potentially target or interfere with satellites.
These developments have generated international debate over the need for stronger rules governing military activities and weapons in outer space.
Role of the US Space Force
The United States established the US Space Force in 2019, making it the newest branch of the US military in more than seven decades. Its primary mission includes protecting American space assets, including a large network of satellites used for communication, surveillance and other military functions.
The role of the Space Force has increasingly expanded beyond simply protecting US space assets. An executive order issued by President Donald Trump last year reportedly emphasised the force’s role in both defensive and offensive operations.
The latest disclosure therefore reflects the changing nature of modern warfare, where control and protection of space-based infrastructure are becoming as strategically important as capabilities on land, at sea and in the air.
