Vice Admiral A.N. Pramod has officially taken charge as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (DCNS) as of August 1, 2026, succeeding Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, who retired on July 31, 2026, after an impressive 38-year career with the Indian Navy. This senior position is pivotal for the Navy’s operational and strategic initiatives.
With a commendable track record spanning over 36 years, Vice Admiral Pramod brings extensive experience to his new role. A graduate of the prestigious 38th Integrated Cadet Course at the Naval Academy in Goa, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1990. His distinguished career includes being a Category ‘A’ Sea King Air Operations Officer and a Communication and Electronic Warfare Specialist, bolstered by professional training at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, and the Naval Higher Command Course at the Naval War College, Goa.
Throughout his naval career, Vice Admiral Pramod has held a range of significant operational, command, and instructional roles both at sea and on land. His key afloat appointments include Executive Officer aboard the guided missile destroyer INS Rajput and commanding various vessels such as INS Abhay, INS Shardul, and the stealth guided missile frigate INS Satpura. These positions provided him with extensive insights into fleet operations, amphibious missions, and maritime combat scenarios.
His operational acumen was notably demonstrated during critical missions. As the Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet during Operation Snow Leopard, he played an instrumental role in enhancing the Indian Navy’s readiness during heightened security situations following the Galwan Valley crisis. Additionally, Vice Admiral Pramod was actively involved in Operation Vijay during the Kargil conflict in 1999 and participated in Operation Parakram in 2001, accruing substantial operational experience during these major military campaigns.
His shore assignments have been equally impactful. Vice Admiral Pramod commanded INS Utkrosh and served as Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College, where he shaped the next generation of military leaders. At Naval Headquarters, he held vital positions such as Joint Director Naval Air Staff and Director Aircraft Acquisition, where he significantly bolstered the Navy’s aviation capabilities. He also contributed as a member of the Tactical Audit Group and the Indian Naval Strategic and Operational Council, enhancing the Navy’s operational planning and maritime strategy.
Upon his promotion to Rear Admiral, he served as the Deputy Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy and later as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air) and Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area (FOMA), overseeing crucial operations and administrative tasks on India’s western coastline.
With his elevation to Vice Admiral in December 2023, he took on the role of Director General Naval Operations (DGNO). In this capacity, he was integral to planning and maintaining operational readiness during Operation Sindoor, coordinating significant maritime deployments to align with India’s national security interests, especially during turbulent times in West Asia, ensuring the security of vital sea lines.
In recognition of his outstanding service and contributions, Vice Admiral Pramod has been honored with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2024 and the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) in 2025.
