Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar has officially assumed the position of the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff as of May 29, 2026. This appointment is a significant milestone in his career, which has spanned over 37 years of dedicated service to the nation. Upon taking charge, Vice Admiral Kochhar paid his respects to the fallen heroes of the armed forces by laying a floral wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.
An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy in Pune, Vice Admiral Kochhar was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership across various roles that encompass command, operational duties, training, acquisition, and strategic planning. As a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, he possesses extensive operational experience, marked by his leadership in prominent naval formations.
His command experience includes leadership roles on several Indian Naval Ships such as the INS Nashak, INS Vibhuti, and INS Kirpan. Notably, he served as the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the INS Trikand, an advanced front-line frigate. His credentials were further solidified through his command of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, where he successfully oversaw the integration of its air wing, enhancing India’s maritime capabilities significantly.
Vice Admiral Kochhar is also a graduate of esteemed institutions including the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, the Naval War College in Goa, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK. His background includes key staff roles at Naval Headquarters, such as Joint Director at Naval Plans and Director of Staff Requirements. In these positions, he was instrumental in shaping naval policy, capability development, and strategic planning.
After reaching the rank of Flag Officer in 2018, he commanded pivotal projects related to carrier development and warship production, thereby contributing significantly to India’s naval modernisation and its vision of a self-reliant, powerful maritime force.
In 2021, he took command of the Western Fleet, one of the Indian Navy’s most formidable formations, before serving as Commandant of the National Defence Academy. In this role, he made considerable improvements to training standards and infrastructure, influencing the next generation of military leaders.
His tenure as the Chief of Staff at the Western Naval Command began on May 25, 2024, where he led operations during a tumultuous security environment in the Western Maritime Theatre. His leadership during Operation Sindoor exemplified the Navy’s readiness to address both conventional and non-conventional threats to national security.
Vice Admiral Kochhar’s exceptional contributions have earned him several accolades, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026, along with the Nau Sena Medal, highlighting his profound service to the Indian Navy.
Prior to his current role, he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, where his efforts were pivotal in enhancing inter-service coordination and reinforcing India’s strategic posture in the eastern Indian Ocean.
