Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, a distinguished officer of the Indian Navy, concluded his remarkable military career on July 31, 2026, after over 38 years of dedicated service. His tenure includes significant leadership positions, most notably as the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), and is marked by a legacy of operational excellence and strategic vision.
Vice Admiral Sobti was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988, after graduating from the National Defence Academy (NDA). He was awarded the President’s Gold Medal for his outstanding performance and went on to further his military education at prestigious institutions, including the Collège Interarmées de Défense in Paris and the College of Naval Warfare in Mumbai, where he also received accolades for the best operational paper during his studies.
Throughout his illustrious career, Vice Admiral Sobti held critical operational roles, including serving as the Navigating Officer aboard INS Kirpan and as part of the commissioning crew of INS Mysore, a Delhi-class guided missile destroyer. He later served on the aircraft carrier INS Viraat as Direction Officer and as Executive Officer of INS Delhi. His command experience includes leading key vessels such as INS Nishank and INS Kora, culminating in his appointment as the Commissioning Commanding Officer of INS Kolkata, the first indigenous Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer, which was commissioned into the Navy in August 2014.
In addition to his naval commands, Vice Admiral Sobti held several significant staff positions at Naval Headquarters, including Joint Director roles in Staff Requirements and Personnel. His diplomatic acumen was evident during his tenure as Naval Attaché at the Embassy of India in Moscow, where he played an essential role in strengthening India’s naval relations.
Ascended to Flag Rank, Vice Admiral Sobti became the Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor at the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, where he shaped the future generation of naval officers.
