  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrating its 46th Raising Day on February 01, 2022. As the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world, it has played a significant role in securing the Indian coasts and enforcing regulations in the maritime zones of India.

Race Heats Up for Naval Fighter Deal

  • The race to supply new aircraft-carrier-borne fighter jets to the Indian Navy is heating up, with the US offering set to follow the French Rafale M in an operational demonstration in Goa in March and its manufacturers saying that all technical requirements will be met.
  • The competition to initially supply 26 jets (18 single-seaters and eight twin-seat trainers) to the Indian Navy is being processed under a government-to-government mode, with requests for an operational demonstration sent to the US and French embassies.

Armed Forces Spent 64% FY22 Funds on India-made Equipment

  • The government push for maximising the purchase of indigenous military equipment, with strict non-deviation norms, has resulted in the armed forces spending 64% of their capital outlay for RE 2021-22 on indigenous options. They have set a working target of 68% for the next financial year.

India, Russia Hold Consultations on UNSC Issues in New Delhi

  • Secretary (West) congratulated Russia on its upcoming Presidency of the United Nations Security Council in February this year. During the meeting, both sides held wide-ranging discussions on issues on the UN Security Council agenda and related developments. Both sides also agreed to deepen cooperation on issues of mutual interest at multilateral platforms.

India Host Slew of Oman’s Defence Teams & Joint Exercises to Bolster Military Ties Army

  • India is laying out the red carpet for Oman’s top defence official Mohammed Nasser Al Zaabi, who will be in India from January 30 to February 4 on an official visit.
  • Eyeing to bolster its military presence amid China’s rising ambitions in the Indian Ocean Region, New Delhi will be hosting a series of defence and military delegations from its oldest strategic partner in the Gulf of Oman.
  • Zaabi will be in Delhi to co-chair the Joint Military Cooperation Committee (JMMC).

 Why is Oman important from defence and strategic point of view?

  • Oman is India’s closest defence partner in the Gulf region and an important anchor for India’s defence and strategic interests.
  • Oman is the only country in the Gulf region with which all three services of the Indian armed forces conduct regular bilateral exercises.
  • Oman also provides critical operational support to Indian naval deployments in the Arabian sea for anti-piracy missions.
  • An aircraft of the Indian Army’s Officers’ Training Academy in Bihar’s Gaya, with two trainee pilots on board, crashed on Friday shortly after take-off.
