Enhancing Maritime Security – A Case for International Cooperation
- A week into India’s United Nations Security Council (UNSC) month-long presidency, PM Modi is chairing a debate on maritime security.
- The debate “Enhancing Maritime Security – A Case for International Cooperation” began with several heads of state or government in attendance, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta, and Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh.
- PM Modi outlined a five Principle framework for the debate.
- Firstly, removing barriers to maritime trade.
- Secondly, disputes shall be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law.
- Thirdly, countries shall jointly tackle threats from non-state actors and natural disasters.
- Fourthly, maritime environment and resources needed to be conserved, highlighting pollution from plastic waste and oil spills.
- Fifthly, responsible connectivity saying a structure was required to boost maritime trade, with the development of global norms and standards.
‘Seekho Aur Kamao’ Scheme
- It is a skill development scheme for youth of 14 – 35 years age group and aiming at providing employment and employment opportunities, improving the employability of existing workers, school dropouts etc. by Ministry for Minority Affairs.
- In the last 7 years appx. 3.92 lakh persons have been benefitted under this employment-oriented scheme.
- The scheme ensures 75% placement, out of which 50% should be in organized sector.
- Post placement support of Rs. 2000/- per month is provided to placed trainees for two months as placement assistance.
Foreign Nationals are Now Eligible for Vaccination in India
- In a landmark initiative to ensure safety from COVID-19, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has taken a decision to allow foreign nationals residing in India to get registered on CoWin portal to take COVID-19 vaccine.
- They can use their passport as identity document for the purpose of registration on CoWIN portal. Once they are registered on this portal, they will get a slot for vaccination.
- As on 9th August 2021, India has administered more than 51 crore vaccine doses across the country.
India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) – 2021
- Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) announced that India shall host the first Internet Governance Forum in the country i.e., IIGF – 2021.
- IIGF- 2021 will be planned for three days, starting from 20th October 2021. The theme of this year’s meeting is Inclusive Internet for Digital India.
- The Forum will act as the platform for various stakeholders to discuss public policy issues related to the Internet.
PM Modi Condemns Attack on Vincent and Grenadines Counterpart
- PM Modi said in a tweet: “I condemn the ghastly attack on Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Excellency, I wish you quick recovery and good health. We will miss your presence at the UNSC Open Debate on Maritime Security today.”
- Gonsalves, 74, was struck on the head by an object during an anti-vaccine rally on Thursday and was flown to Barbados for medical treatment. He said on Friday he was recovering.
- The protest was organized by unions representing nurses, police and other workers who fear Covid-19 vaccinations could be mandated for some employees by the government, according to reports and videos on social media.
- The premier of the Caribbean country was attacked as he walked through a group of about 200 protesters to get into parliament.
National Traders Day Celebrated
- Every Year 9th of August is Celebrated as National Traders Day to cherish trader contribution in the development of the country.
- Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal lauded their contributions and said there are backbone of the country’s economy and financial powers. He also said traders are the true ambassadors of Brand India. He asked the traders to push for the PM’s clarion call for “Vocal for Local” and become ambassadors of brand India.
