IAC VIKRANT SETS SAIL FOR NEXT SET OF SEA TRIALS

  • After two successive high-profile visits – the President and Vice President of India – within a span of fewer than two weeks, IAC Vikrant is heading out for the next set of sea trials. 
  • While the maiden sea trials in August last year were to establish propulsion, navigational suite & basic operations, the second sea trial later in October-November witnessed the ship being put through its paces in terms of various machinery trials and flight trials.
  • Be it the case of Atmanirbharta wherein 76% of the equipment is indigenously sourced or the close engagement between the Design teams of the Indian Navy and M/s Cochin Shipyard Limited – a high-point in the largest and most complex warship ever to be built in the country. 

About INS VIKRANT:

  • The warship has been built at a cost of around ₹23,000 crores.
  • The warship will operate MiG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31 helicopters, MH-60R multi-role helicopters.
  • It has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1,700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers.
  • Vikrant has a top speed of around 28 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles.
  • The IAC is 262 metres long, 62 metres wide and it has a height of 59 metres. Its construction began in 2009.
  • The warship has been built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
  • India currently has only one aircraft carrier — INS Vikramaditya.

Mod Surveys 17.78 Lakh Acres of Defence Land

  • Ministry of Defence owns large tracts of land admeasuring about 17.99 lakh acres out of which approximately 1.61 lakh acres are situated within the 62 notified Cantonments. About 16.38 lakh acres are spread across many pockets outside the Cantonments.
  • Out of 16.38 lakh acres of land, about 18,000 acres is either state-hired land or is proposed for deletion from records on account of transfer to other Govt. Depts.
  • Modern survey technologies like Electronic Total Station (ETS) and Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) were used in the survey. To further speed up the process, Drone imagery and Satellite imagery-based survey were leveraged for reliable, robust & time-bound outcomes.
  • Besides this, Satellite Imagery based survey was done for the first time for many defence land pockets, especially for certain pockets again measuring lakhs acres of defence land.

India Braces for South-East Asia Test As China Pushes Defence Deals

  • China, through its state-owned enterprise China Electronic & Technological Corporation International (CETCI), has been assiduously making efforts to expand its footprints in the defence sector in South-East Asia that could emerge as a security challenge for India in its extended neighbourhood.
  •  CETCI is at the forefront of coordinating with companies in SE Asia for marketing and establishing production facilities including in defence and intelligence-related technology and social media management systems.
  • CETCI has been particularly active in Thailand, which shares maritime boundaries with India, and Malaysia.

India Urges France to Advocate For A Ban On Weapon Sales By EU To Pakistan

  • India has urged France to advocate for a ban on weapon sales by the European Union to Pakistan, citing its support for terrorism, the distinct possibility of transfer of sensitive technologies to China & its poor human rights record. 
  • France has taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union this month and will hold it till June.
  • France had assured India that it wouldn’t transfer sensitive weapon systems to Pakistan and stood by New Delhi amid border confrontation with China.

Maj Gen Vikas Lakhera Assumes Charge As IG Assam Rifles (North)

  • Major General Vikas Lakhera has assumed charge as the 20th Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North).
  • He has taken over charge from Maj Gen VPS Kaushik.
  • The general officer was in 1990 commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry regiment, which he later commanded in western Assam.
