  • Adm R Hari Kumar CNS launched Indian Navy’s indigenously designed & developed C2 messaging system SANCHAR 2.0, contributing towards a paperless, secure & Green India with seamless connectivity.

9th Annual Army to Army Staff Talks India & SL

  • 9th Annual Army to Army Staff Talks AAST between Indian Army & Sri Lankan Army are being conducted at Pune. The talks will focus on further strengthening defence cooperation engagements including training and exchanges in the fields of sports & culture.
  • India provided financial assistance of 2.4 billion USD to Sri Lanka.

India – Sri Lanka Relations

  • The relationship between India and Sri Lanka is more than 2,500 years old.
  • Both countries have a legacy of intellectual, cultural, religious & linguistic interaction.
  • Sri Lanka is a member of regional groupings like BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) and SAARC in which India plays a leading role.

India – Sri Lanka Relations

  • The Palk Strait, about 40 km (25 miles) wide at its narrowest point, separates the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and northern Sri Lanka.
  • India deployed Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka under Operation Pawan to disarm the different militant groups.

  • India and Sri Lanka conduct joint Military (‘Mitra Shakti’) and Naval exercises (SLINEX).

Commercial Relations

  • Sri Lanka has long been a priority destination for direct investment from India.
  • Sri Lanka is one of India’s largest trading partners among the SAARC countries. India in turn is Sri Lanka’s largest trade partner globally.
  • India’s exports to Sri Lanka amounted to $5.3 billion in 2015-17 whereas its imports from the country were at $743 million.

Gripen, Russian Biggest Challengers to Rafale: MMRCA  

  • The tender for 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) or MMRCA.20 is a program that Delhi attaches utmost importance to.
  • In 2018, the Indian government issued an RFI for the procurement of 114 fighter jets under MRFA. The new fighters are expected to replace the ageing MiG-21s, Mirage 2000s, and the Jaguars of the Indian Air Force.

Contenders of MMRCA 2. O:

  • Lockheed Martin’s F-21, Boeing’s Super Hornet F/A-18 E/F and F-15EX, Dassault’s Rafale, Saab’s Gripen JAS-39 E/F, Russian MiG-35, and SU-35, and Eurofighter Typhoon.

Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meet on Indo-pacific

  • The FM of the Quad grouping of India, the US, Australia & Japan vowed to work vigorously to achieve the grouping’s shared vision of a free, open & inclusive Indo-Pacific & collectively deal with common threats such as terrorism.
  • At a joint media briefing after the talks, Quad foreign ministers reaffirmed their support to principles of openness, protection of national sovereignty & observance of rules & fair play.
  • About Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD):
  • It is the grouping of four democracies –India, Australia, the US, and Japan.
  • Objective to ensure and support a “free, open and prosperous” Indo-Pacific region.
  • It aims at countering China’s aggressive behaviour in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Formed On: November 12, 2017.

Myanmar & Pakistan In Arms Deal, Guided By China

  • Pakistan’s military partnership with India’s eastern neighbour Myanmar is gathering momentum with a senior-level military delegation from the Directorate of Military Procurement from the SE Asian country scheduled to visit Pakistan for a pre-shipment inspection of arms.
  • Myanmar military is planning to purchase 60 &81 mm mortars, M-79 grenade launchers & Heavy Machine Guns from Pakistan.
  • India-Myanmar Relations:
  • Myanmar is geopolitically significant to India as it stands at the center of the India-Southeast Asia geography.
  • Myanmar is the only Southeast Asian country that shares a land border with northeastern India.
  • Myanmar is the only country that sits at the intersection of India’s “Neighborhood First” policy and its “Act East” policy.
