Joint Security Exercise at Port Blair Airfield

  • Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) conducted a joint security exercise at Port Blair airfield on February 16, 2022.
    • The aim of the drill was to test the preparedness of all security agencies during various contingencies like a terrorist attack, hostage crisis & hijack situations at the airfield or elsewhere.
    • Day and night drills were conducted at INS Utkrosh and Veer Savarkar International Airport.
    • Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) from the Army, Navy, and CISF were deployed to counter portrayed terrorist threats at various places inside the airfield.

Kuwait Army Allows Women In Combat Roles

  • Kuwaiti women are angry after the military, having allowed female soldiers in combat roles, decided they need the permission of a male guardian and banned them from carrying weapons.
  • Activists have decried the policy as “one step forward, two steps back” after the defence ministry also decided that women in the armed forces, unlike civilians, must wear head coverings.

Russia Starts Caspian Navy Drills

  • Around 20 Russian warships started drills in the Caspian Sea on Thursday, Russia’s defence ministry said, part of broader war games involving most of its army and navy.
  • Russian military activity has drawn global attention amid its standoff with the West over Ukraine’s NATO aspiration. Moscow has massed over 100,000 troops near its neighbour’s borders but denies planning an attack.
  • The Caspian Sea drills are part of the Russian Navy’s larger naval drills currently being held in all waters bordering Russian territory as well as other “operationally important areas.”
  • The exercises are aimed at protecting “Russian national interests in the world ocean, as well as to counter military threats to the Russian Federation from the sea and ocean.”

US Will Continue to Assist Taiwan

  • Reiterating no change in America’s One-China policy based on Taiwan, US State Department officials on Thursday said that Washington support for Taipei is “rock solid” and contributes to the maintenance of “peace and stability” within the region.
  • “There has been no change to America’s one-China policy which is based on Taiwan’s relation act, the three joint communique and six assurances. US support for Taiwan is rock solid and contributes to the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan strait within the region,” .
  • The US administration under President Joe Biden had adopted a shift in “One-China policy” routinely highlighting and quoting the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) of 1979.
  • Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 mentions the United States would “consider any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means … a threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific and of grave concern to the United States.”
  • In the meantime, Taiwan has welcomed the US move to approve USD 100 million arms sales.

Afghanistan Among Top Priorities for UN Cooperation

  • Conflict prevention, counter terrorism, and support to Afghanistan, top the list of issues on which the UN and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) should bolster their cooperation, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council.
  • The CSTO is a Eurasian regional grouping comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation, and Tajikistan.
  • The CTSO is based on the Collective Security Treaty, signed in 1992 as a follow-up to the Commonwealth of Independent States, and was officially established in 2002.
  • The bloc has evolved from a common defense grouping to a multifunctional alliance with capabilities in diplomacy, information-sharing, counter terrorism & the maintenance of regional peace and security.
