International Day To Combat Islamophobia

  • UN General Assembly approved a resolution for setting March 15th as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
  • The resolution was introduced by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
  • The resolution, adopted by consensus by the 193-member world body and cosponsored by 55 mainly Muslim countries.
  • The resolution asks all countries, U.N. bodies, international and regional organisations, civil society, private sector and faith-based organisations “to organise and support various high-visibility events aimed at effectively increasing awareness of all levels about curbing Islamophobia.
  • The resolution emphasizes the right to freedom of religion and belief and recalls a 1981 resolution calling for “the elimination of all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief”.
  • India expressed concern over phobia against one religion being elevated to the level of an international day, saying there are growing contemporary forms of religiophobia, especially anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist, and anti-Sikh phobias.

Centenary Year Of Mathrubhumi

  • Mathrubhumi is a Malayalam newspaper that is published from Kerala, India. It was founded by K. P. Kesava Menon, an active volunteer in the Indian freedom struggle against the British. The word “Mathrubhumi” translates to “mother land”.
  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the year-long celebrations of the centenary year of Mathrubhumi – the Malayalam daily – on 18th March, 2022 at 11 AM via video conferencing.
  • Mathrubhumi started functioning on March 18, 1923. It has been at the forefront of pushing across social reforms and developmental agenda, while constantly highlighting issues of national interest. Mathrubhumi has 15 editions and 11 periodicals. Also, Mathrubhumi Books division publishes titles on a wide range of issues of contemporary interest.

E-Tourist Visas Restored

  • Ministry of Home Affairs has restored all valid five-year e-tourist visas to nationals of 156 countries with immediate effect which was suspended since March 2020 because of the Covid pandemic.
  • Nationals of these counties will also be eligible for issuance of fresh e-Tourist visas. The government took the step keeping in view the improvement in the COVID-19 situation in the country and considering the need for further relaxation of visa and travel restrictions.
  • The Ministry has also restored valid regular (paper) long-duration – 10 years tourist visas for US and Japanese nationals, as well as permit issue of fresh visas to citizens of both countries.
  • It said, in no case, foreign nationals holding tourist or e-tourist visas will be allowed to enter via land or riverine borders. However, the instructions will not be applicable to Afghanistan nationals who will continue to be governed by e-Emergency X-Miscellaneous Visa.

Mission Jeevan Raksha

  • Railway Protection Force has rescued as many as 1156 children in February this year. This includes 369 girls. Railways Ministry said the lives of 62 people were saved by RPF personnel as part of the mission Jeevan Raksha.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Jayanthi Celebrated

  • Bangladesh is celebrating the 102nd birth anniversary of its father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The architect of modern Bangladesh was born on 17 March 1920 at Tungipara village of Gopalganj in undivided India.
  • President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his mausoleum at his birthplace in Tungipara on Thursday.
  • Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
  • Several programmes are being organised across Bangladesh to celebrate the day. The ruling Awami League is holding a weeklong programme with the title ‘Hridoye Pitribhumi’.

Council Of Europe Expels Russia From Human Rights Body

  • The Council of Europe has expelled Russia from the continent’s foremost human rights body in an unprecedented move over its military operation  in Ukraine. The 47-nation organization’s committee of ministers said in a statement that the Russian Federation ceases to be a member of the Council of Europe as from today, after 26 years of membership. The decision comes on the heels of weeks of condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
  • Early in the week, the group’s parliamentary assembly already initiated the process of expulsion and unanimously backed that Russia would be kicked out.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insisted today that it would have left the body regardless. In an interview with Russian broadcaster RBK, he accused NATO and EU countries of abusing their majority in the council, eventually transforming it into a tool for anti-Russian policy. Ukraine is also a member of the Council of Europe.
  • Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba immediately welcomed the decision, posting on Twitter that there is no place for Russia in European bodies as it wages a barbaric war of aggression against Ukraine and commits multiple war crimes.
  • The Council is an international organization founded in the wake of World War II to uphold human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Europe.
