Russia, Belarus Extend Huge Military Exercises

  • Belarus’ Defence Ministry said Russia and Belarus would extend joint military exercises that had been due to end on Sunday, dashing Western hopes that Russia would swiftly withdraw forces that could be used in a potential invasion of Ukraine.
    • The ministry did not say how long Russian troops in Belarus – estimated by NATO to number 30,000 – might now remain in the country, which lies north of Ukraine.
    • The decision to extend was taken because of increased military activity near the borders of Russia and Belarus and an escalation of the situation in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass, the Belarus ministry said.

Australia Condemns China For ‘Unprofessional & Unsafe Military Conduct’

  • Australia on Saturday condemned China for “unprofessional and unsafe military conduct” after its warship used a laser to “illuminate” an Australian Air Force jet.
  • The incident occurred when an Australian P-8A aircraft, reconnaissance & anti-submarine warfare plane was flying over the Arafura Sea, the body of water b/w Australia’s Northern Territory & the island of New Guinea to the north.
  • The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ship that pointed the laser at the Australian jet was one of two PLAN warships sailing east across the Arafura Sea at the time, the Australian military said.
  • “During critical phases of flight when the pilot does not have adequate time to recover, the consequences of laser exposure could be tragic,” a US Federal Aviation Administration document said.

President, RM, RRM Arrived at Vizag For PFR 2022

  • President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, will be reviewing the Naval Fleet comprising over 60 ships and submarines, and 55 aircraft on February 21.
  • The President’s Yacht is an indigenously built Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel, INS Sumitra, which will lead the Presidential Column.
  • Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Sunday reviewed the preparation for the President’s Fleet Review (PFR).
  • This will be the twelfth Fleet Review and has a special significance that it is being conducted on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence being celebrated as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ across the Nation.

4th Edition of Staff Talks INDIAN NAVY & OMAN

  • Towards further bolstering existing close cooperation b/n Indian Navy (IN) & Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), 4th edition of Staff Talks, co-chaired by Cmde (Foreign Cooperation), IN & Director Naval Operations, RNO, conducted at New Delhi from 15 – 18 Feb 22.

INS Kalpeni Visited Island of The Lakshadweep  

  • As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, INS Kalpeni visited Kalpeni & Agatti Island of the Lakshadweep group of Islands. The ship undertook presentations on Naval operations, to inspire young students to join the Armed Forces.
  • The ship undertook presentations regarding Naval operations to inspire young students to join the armed forces. Further, activities like a visit on board the ship, first aid demo, Operations Demo were undertaken for students, NSS & NCC cadets.
  • The visit achieved its aim of enhancing awareness of Naval operations amongst the Naval populace and motivating the young students and cadets for joining the Indian Armed Forces.
  • The customary crest of the ship was exchanged with Kalpeni Island officials as a token of greeting. A motivational movie was screened and walk around was organised by Naval personnel for students.
