A solemn wreath-laying ceremony took place at the War Memorial of the Bengal Engineer Group & Centre (BEG&C) in Roorkee, commemorating the 223rd Group Day celebrations. This event serves to honor the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the Bengal Sappers, recognized as one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most decorated engineering regiments.

The ceremony commenced with Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command, laying a wreath at the memorial. This gesture was a heartfelt tribute to the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. The atmosphere was charged with reverence and pride as officers, soldiers, and veterans united to pay homage to the indomitable spirit of the Bengal Sappers, which has flourished for over two centuries.

Following the wreath-laying, the Army Commander conducted a review of an impressive Guard of Honour. The presence of a 91-year-old veteran added deep emotional weight to the occasion, highlighting the profound connection between generations of Sappers.

The celebrations not only served as a moment of remembrance but also as a reunion, reflecting the core values of the Bengal Sappers—service, camaraderie, and technical excellence. Veterans and current members exchanged stories of valor and engineering accomplishments, reinforcing the proud traditions that continue to motivate and inspire new generations of soldiers.

In his address, Lieutenant General Sengupta lauded the historic contributions made by the Bengal Engineer Group to the nation’s defense infrastructure, disaster relief, and combat engineering.
