Great Barrier Reef Should be Added to a List of “in danger” World Heritage Sites

  • The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has recommended that the Australia’s Great Barrier Reef should be added to a list of “in danger” World Heritage Sites.
  • Placement on the ‘‘in-danger list’’ is not considered a sanction. Some nations have their sites added to gain international attention and help to save them.
  • Selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981 the Barrier Reef is the world’s most extensive and spectacular coral reef ecosystem composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands.
  • It was recommended to add to the list because of the impact of climate change.
  • Despite Reef 2050, the coral reef ecosystem has suffered three major bleaching events since 2015 due to Climate Change.

4th Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan

  • The Ramgarh Vishdhari wildlife sanctuary received a nod from the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s (NTCA) technical committee to become the 4th Tiger reserve of Rajasthan.
  • This will be the 52nd Tiger Reserve of India.
  • The Global Tiger Day, celebrated on 29th July, is an annual event marked to raise awareness about tiger conservation.

NSA Doval to Attend SCO Meeting

  • National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is likely to attend the 16th meeting of the Secretaries of the Security Council, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Tajikistan’s Dushanbe on June 23-24.
  • The SCO has eight member states – Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
  • Also Known as Shanghai Pact, This Grouping is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance, the creation of which was announced on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai, China

Cabinet Approves ‘The Deep Ocean Mission’

  • The Mission Proposes to Explore the Deep Ocean and will be under the aegis of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
  • Underwater robotics and ‘manned’ submersibles are key components of the Mission.
  • Tasks such as deep-sea mining, survey, energy exploration etc. will be undertaken.
  • These technological developments are funded under an umbrella scheme of the government – called Ocean Services, Technology, Observations, Resources Modelling and Science (O-SMART).

Union Government Supports States/UT to Fight Black Fungus

  • Union Ministry for Chemicals and Fertilizers has allocated 61,120 vials of Liposomal Amphotericin-B, used in the treatment of black fungus to all States and Union Territories.
  • So far 7.9 Lakh vials have been Allocated Across the Country.
  • Mucormycosis or black fungus is a complication caused by a fungal infection.
  • The disease is being detected among patients who are recovering or have recovered from COVID-19.

PM Lauds all Indian Olympians on Olympic Day

  • Wishes Indian athletes for Tokyo Olympic.
  • World Olympic Day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894, in Paris.
  • The 2020 Summer Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in the Japanese capital between 23 July and 8 August.
  • The Paralympic Games are between 24 August and 5 September.
  • They were postponed last year because of Covid.
