A 28-year-old man has been remanded in custody in Denmark amidst allegations of purchasing drones intended for use in a Hamas-related terrorist attack, according to the Danish intelligence service PET. Flemming Drejer, head of operations at PET, stated that the man’s actions were believed to have direct connections to Hamas and suggested potential plans for an attack either within Denmark or abroad.
During a court appearance on Monday, the suspect was ordered to remain in custody until June 11. The investigation has drawn links between Hamas and various criminal gangs operating in Denmark, building off a series of arrests made in December 2023 aimed at thwarting a suspected terrorist plot. At that time, six individuals were detained—four in absentia—including the 28-year-old, who reportedly has a significant role in organized crime in Copenhagen.
Adding further complexity to the case, Danish media reported that the suspect had been extradited from Lebanon in relation to an unrelated double murder case. PET has classified him as a prominent figure in a banned gang with established ties to Hamas.
The intelligence service has previously warned that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could influence the security landscape within Denmark. PET noted that such conflicts hold significant potential for inciting both spontaneous and premeditated responses, which may include terrorist attacks by various known and unknown actors.
This alarming development reflects growing concerns about national security and the implications of international conflicts spilling over into domestic territories, prompting heightened scrutiny from law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
