Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT) in SSBs is conducted on Day-1 and is the second objective of Stage-I tests. PPDT is a screening test which is almost an elimination test of the candidate. It is conducted to know about the imagination power and description ability of a candidate within a limited time allotted.

Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) is one the psychologist tests conducted on Day-2 of the SSB. It is one of the Stage-II tests; candidates who get screened-in, are retained for stage 2 testing. This test is geared to know about the intellectual, cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning of the candidates and identify their intelligence, personality style, interpersonal processes and adaptive skills.

Sample TAT & PPDT Story 1

Rohan and his friends planned a picnic by the seaside. While they were enjoying their meal, they suddenly heard a scream and saw a man drowning in a whirlpool. Rohan, who is a trained swimmer, quickly grabbed a lifebuoy and ran towards the water. His friends assisted by keeping an eye on the man’s movements and calling for help. Rohan successfully throws the lifebuoy to the drowning man, pulls him to safety, and provides first aid. The man regains consciousness, and the group ensures he is stable before taking him to the hospital for further check-ups.

Akash, a NCC cadet, was enjoying a picnic with his college friends when they noticed someone struggling in the water. The person had unknowingly stepped into a deep pit near the shore. Akash immediately takes charge, instructing his friends to stay calm. He quickly ties a rope to a tree, hands one end to his friend, and swims towards the drowning person with a lifebuoy. Meanwhile, another friend calls the local authorities. Akash successfully rescues the person, ensuring his safety. His leadership and quick thinking prevent a tragedy, and he earns the admiration of his friends. The incident inspires many to learn swimming and basic life-saving techniques.

Sample TAT & PPDT Story 3

A group of college students, including Vivek, were having a day out by the beach. One of them, who didn’t know how to swim, accidentally slipped into a deep water hole. Vivek, who is well-trained in first aid and survival techniques, quickly gathers his friends and assigns roles. One friend runs to get help, another prepares medical aid, while Vivek takes a floating ring and rushes into the water to save the drowning person. With coordinated efforts, the drowning person is saved and brought to shore safely. The team successfully manages the situation, ensuring no further panic. This incident strengthens their bond and highlights the importance of teamwork in emergencies.

Ravi, an aspiring defense officer, was enjoying a weekend outing with his family when he heard cries for help from the nearby water body. A boy had fallen into the water while playing near the shore. Without wasting time, Ravi instructs his family members to call the authorities while he grabs a lifebuoy and rushes to the rescue. Using his knowledge of water currents, he approaches the drowning boy carefully and brings him back to safety. Ravi successfully rescues the boy and ensures he is given medical attention. Suresh and his family went on a beach picnic. They were enjoying their time when they noticed a tourist caught in a whirlpool, struggling to stay afloat. Suresh, being an experienced lifeguard, instructs his family to remain calm. He quickly assesses the situation, grabs a lifebuoy, and swims towards the victim. Simultaneously, his wife calls for emergency help. Suresh successfully rescues the tourist, providing first aid and calming him down.
