World Wildlife Day

  • World Wildlife Day has been celebrated every year on the 3rd of March since 2013.
  • The date chosen coincides with the day of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) which was signed in 1973.
  • The UNGA (General Assembly) resolution also designated the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on the UN (United Nations) calendar.
  • What is the theme of 2022?
  • Theme: Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration.
  • This theme is chosen to draw attention to the conservation status of some of the most critically endangered species of wild fauna and flora.

State of India’s Environment Report 2022

  • The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), released the State of India’s Environment Report 2022.
  • The report is the annual publication of the Centre for Science and Environment, and Down To Earth (magazine).
  • The report focuses on climate change, migration, health and food systems. It also covers biodiversity, forest and wildlife, energy, industry, habitat, pollution, waste, agriculture and rural development.
  • CSE is a public interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi.
  • Highlights Of The Report:
  • Economy: The target is to raise the GDP to nearly USD 4 trillion by 2022-23. But by 2020, the economy has grown only to USD 2.48 trillion.
  • Employment: The target is to increase the female labor force participation rate to at least 30% by 2022-23. It stood at 17.3% in January-March 2020.
  • Drinking Water: The target is to provide safe piped drinking water to all by 2022-23. Only 45% of the target has been achieved.
  • Forest Cover: The target is to increase it to 33.3% of the geographical area, as National Forest Policy, 1988. By 2019, 21.6% of India was under forest cover.
  • SDG: In 2021 India ranked 117 among 192 nations in the SDG Index. India’s overall SDG score was 66 out of 100.

Ispat Rajbhasha Award

  • National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (NMDC), Country’s largest Iron Ore producer, a CPSE under Ministry of Steel received 1st prize in the Ispat Rajbhasha Award for 2018-19 and 2020-21 and the Ispat Rajbhasha Prerna Award for 2019-20 in the meeting of the Hindi Salahakar Committee of the Ministry of Steel held in Madurai on 3rd March 2022.
  • The Union Minister of Steel, Shri Ram Chandra Prasad Singh, presented the accolades to Shri Sumit Deb, Chairman and Managing Director, NMDC.
  • He appreciated the efforts of all the Steel PSEs in putting into practice the official language of India and congratulated NMDC for winning the awards.
  • NMDC Limited, is a government owned mineral producer.
  • It is under the ownership of Ministry of Steel, Government of India.
  • It is involved in the exploration of iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite, etc.

India Global Forum 2022

  • Minister of State, Ministry of Electronics and Information technology & Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Mr Rajeev Chandrasekhar shall be attending the India Global Forum (IGF) at Bengaluru scheduled for 7th and 8th of March.
  • IGF is the agenda-setting forum for international business and global leaders. It offers a selection of platforms that international corporates and policymakers can leverage to interact with stakeholders in their sectors and geographies of strategic importance.
  • This is the first ever edition of IGF at Bengaluru. The previous editions were hosted at Dubai & UK and addressed by esteemed speakers like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prince of Wales, the PM of UK Boris Johnson, Director General World Health Organization DrTedros Adhanom, Ex PM UK Tony Blair amongst other leaders from Governments & industry across the globe.
  • The Forum takes place in March in the backdrop of India emerging as a reformed, resolute & a resilient Nation – enduring the Covid Pandemic and emerging as the fastest growing economy in the World.
  • Despite widespread disruptions caused by the pandemic, India created 42 Unicorns in the year 2021 at a rate of over 3 per month with a total valuation of around $90 billion.
  • With more than 60,000 registered Startups, India has now become the 3rd largest & one of the most vibrant startup ecosystems in the world.

Covid Vaccine Updates

  • Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has said that 97 percent of the adult population have been inoculated with the first dose of COVID 19 vaccine. In a tweet, he said the nation is rapidly marching towards achieving 100 percent first dose mark.
  • He said that with ‘Sabka Prayas’, the world’s largest vaccination drive is going from strength to strength.
  • Over two crore healthcare and frontline workers and citizens aged 60 years and above have received Precaution Dose. Tweeting about this, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has requested all those who are eligible to get their Precaution Dose at the earliest.

Israeli PM Bennett Meets Putin

  • Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday night to discuss the Ukraine crisis. The meeting lasted for three hours. He also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after his meeting with Putin. Later Bennett flew to Germany to meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
  • According to Bennett’s office, the trip was made in coordination with the Biden administration.
  • Mr. Bennett was accompanied by Housing Minister Ze’ev Elkin along with National Security Adviser Eyal Hulata, diplomatic adviser Shimrit Meir, and spokesman Matan Sidi.

Visa & Mastercard Suspend Operations In Russia

  • US payments firms Visa and Mastercard said they are suspending operations in Russia over the Ukraine issue. Two companies said, they will work with their clients and partners to cease all transactions in Russia. In a statement, chief executive officer of Visa, Al Kelly said, the company is compelled to act following Russia’s unprovoked action against Ukraine.
  • Mastercard said its cards issued by Russian banks will no longer be supported by Mastercard networks, and any card issued by the company outside Russia will not work at Russian merchants or ATMs.
