Diehl Defence to Lead Multinational Development of Advanced IRIS-T Block II Missile

Diehl Defence, a prominent German defense contractor, has been awarded the lead role in a new multinational initiative to enhance the IRIS-T air-to-air missile system. This follows the company’s successful management of the missile’s initial development phase, during which it collaborated with partners from Spain, Italy, Greece, Sweden, and Norway.

The new initiative, known as the Block II contract, aims to augment the capabilities of the IRIS-T missile, setting new standards that expand its functionality beyond its traditional air-to-air combat role. While Diehl has not detailed the specific upgrades and improvements planned for the missile, the firm emphasized the significance of this contract for the future trajectory of the IRIS-T project, asserting their commitment to continuing as the primary contractor.

Diehl Defence will collaborate with industry representatives from Sweden, Spain, and Italy as part of this international project, highlighting the cooperative spirit among European defense firms. The IRIS-T (InfraRed Imaging System – Tail/Thrust Vector Controlled) is recognized as a short-range missile integral to aerial combat, now a key component of several advanced fighter aircraft including the Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen, F-16, Spain’s EF-18 Hornets, and F-5E Tigers.

With impressive performance metrics, the missile can reach speeds of up to Mach 3 and engage targets at distances of up to 25 kilometers (approximately 15.5 miles). A standout feature of the IRIS-T is its capability to engage enemies from the rear, providing tactical advantages by allowing pilots to maintain their flight paths without needing to maneuver for a proper targeting angle.

Since its introduction in 2005, Diehl Defence has distributed over 5,000 IRIS-T missiles to air forces across 13 different nations, underscoring the missile’s global acceptance and operational success. The company articulated that the IRIS-T initiative showcases the strength of European collaboration in the defense sector, reaffirming the exceptional advancements that the European defense industry can achieve through joint efforts.
