The U.S. Air Force has initiated a partnership with BioFlyte, a New Mexico-based company specializing in chemical and bioaerosol detection technology, to test an innovative system aimed at enhancing security for critical military infrastructure. The focus of the project revolves around BioFlyte’s advanced detection platform, the BioTOF z200, which leverages mass spectrometry combined with artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms.
This initiative is poised to validate the BioTOF z200’s efficacy in detecting and identifying aerosolized threats, addressing the urgent need to safeguard military installations and personnel from current and emerging biological warfare risks. The testing program will be conducted in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX, the latter being a framework designed to streamline the proposal-to-award process for small businesses contributing to defense advancements.
BioFlyte’s BioTOF z200 technology is specifically engineered to extract airborne particulates in environments where there may be potential hazards, particularly useful within clinical laboratories and operational fields. Highlights of the system include its modular design, autonomous activation capability, user-friendly maintenance procedures, and a secure cloud-based interface for real-time threat intelligence and software updates.
In terms of its detection capabilities, the BioTOF z200 is capable of analyzing a diverse array of biomolecules and compounds. This includes the identification of bacteria, viruses, and biotoxins similar to anthrax and ricin, as well as the detection of pharmaceutical agents like fentanyl. Todd Sickles, CEO of BioFlyte, emphasized the urgent need for innovation in the face of evolving threats. He expressed pride in being able to support the U.S. military with a solution that promises to enhance safety measures against dangerous chemical and biological threats.
As concerns over homeland security and critical infrastructure protection remain paramount for government and military leaders, BioFlyte’s technology could play a pivotal role in fortifying defense strategies, ensuring the safety of military personnel amidst a continually changing threat landscape.
