The German defense procurement agency has entered into a significant framework follow-on contract with Rheinmetall, potentially valued at up to 3.1 billion euros (approximately $3.20 billion), aimed at enhancing the capabilities of soldier-systems within the German military. This contract marks a major step in Germany’s effort to modernize its military capabilities by committing to the procurement of up to 368 Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System (IdZ-ES) platoon systems by the year 2030.
Each platoon system consists of 34 individual soldier-systems along with a variety of peripheral components, including IT equipment, optics, optronics, military clothing, and protective carrying equipment. The IdZ-ES systems are designed to foster seamless integration between dismounted soldiers and digitized vehicle platforms, allowing them to access the same real-time information through advanced digital radio communication.
As part of this initiative, 68 operational IdZ-ES platoon systems will undergo significant upgrades to a new digital standard prior to their delivery. Additionally, an extra order for 24 platoon systems is slated for execution in the first quarter of 2025, valued at approximately 417 million euros (around $430 million).
The forthcoming systems will boast a modernized design that aligns with the operational IdZ-ES version required for the VJTF 2023, a critical component of the mechanized infantry system. The restructured design specifically addresses issues of obsolescence by removing outdated technical elements, thereby enhancing compatibility with advanced military vehicles like the Boxer armored transport vehicle and the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. Furthermore, the new soldier-systems will be capable of interfacing with the Digitisation of Land-Based Operations communication network and are being prepared for future integration with various aerial platforms, ensuring comprehensive battlefield connectivity.
This initiative underscores Germany’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities amidst evolving security challenges, paving the way for a more integrated and technologically advanced military force.
