GE Aerospace Secures Contract for Indian Air Force Apache Helicopter Engine Sustainment Services

GE Aerospace has secured a significant contract to provide sustainment services for the engines of the Indian Air Force’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. The agreement spans five years and will concentrate on the T700-GE-701D engine systems that are integral to the Apache fleet. This comprehensive service package includes maintenance, repair, and overhaul solutions tailored for the engines, alongside the provision of essential spare parts aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities and availability of the helicopters.

In a statement reported by Mumbai-based news agency The Economic Times, Youngje Kim from GE Aerospace’s Asia Pacific division emphasized the importance of this partnership. “We are honoured to continue our partnership with the Indian Air Force through this contract, which underscores our commitment to delivering reliable and innovative sustainment solutions for critical defence platforms,” he said. Kim further highlighted that this agreement is a testament to GE Aerospace’s dedication to supporting the operational needs and mission readiness of the Indian Air Force, ensuring that the T700 engines function at optimal performance levels.

The T700 engine series from GE Aerospace has established a solid reputation and is currently powering 15 different types of rotary and fixed-wing aircraft across more than 50 nations. With a proven track record of reliability, the T700 engines have served over 130 military and civilian clients, accumulating approximately 130 million flight hours in total.

The Apache AH-64E helicopter is a technologically advanced aircraft, equipped with two T700 turboshaft engines that enable it to reach a top speed of 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour and a maximum range of 500 kilometers (311 miles). The helicopter measures 18 meters (59 feet) in length, featuring a rotor diameter of 15 meters (49 feet). In addition to its robust performance metrics, the Apache is outfitted with an advanced defensive suite and modern avionics, capable of engaging in multi-domain operations with the capacity to carry a range of missiles and a 30-millimeter chain gun for offensive missions.

Currently, Boeing, the developer of the Apache helicopter, is in the process of delivering a total of 28 units to the Indian military. As of 2020, 22 of these helicopters have already been handed over, bolstering India’s air combat capabilities through this advanced aviation platform. The recent partnership between GE Aerospace and the Indian Air Force marks a critical enhancement to the sustainment and operational efficiency of the Apache fleet, reinforcing both entities’ commitment to maintaining high standards in military aviation.
