The US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has unveiled the latest rendering of its highly classified AIM-260A Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM) as part of a broadened showcase of advanced weaponry. This revelation came during a portfolio overview by the Program Executive Office for Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons, where the AIM-260A was highlighted alongside other notable systems, including the AIM-9M/X Sidewinder and the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM).
The latest image of the AIM-260A JATM indicates a fuselage design reminiscent of the AIM-120; however, it distinguishes itself with a significantly larger rocket motor section. This enhancement suggests an intention for extended range capabilities, a crucial factor in modern aerial combat scenarios. An intriguing aspect of the missile’s design is its lack of mid-body control surfaces, which has prompted questions among defense analysts regarding its aerodynamic stability and maneuverability in various flight conditions.
Although comprehensive technical specifications remain under wraps, it has been reported that flight testing for the AIM-260A JATM commenced in 2020, with initial trials demonstrating success against aerial targets, including a QF-16 target aircraft.
