In a tragic incident reported on Saturday, Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists carried out an ambush that resulted in the deaths of 11 soldiers in northern Niger, close to the Algerian border. The attack occurred in the Ekade Malane area, where an army patrol was targeted. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) has since claimed responsibility for this assault.

State radio has corroborated the details of the attack and the death toll but referred to the attackers as “bandits” rather than explicitly linking them to jihadist groups.
