Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, the General Officer Commanding of the Indian Army’s Spear Corps, made a significant visit to a formation in Manipur on Thursday, a region currently facing substantial challenges due to ongoing ethnic conflicts that have resulted in over 200 fatalities since May 2023. This visit comes at a crucial juncture, as tensions remain high and the need for operational readiness is more pressing than ever.
During his time in Manipur, Lt Gen Pendharkar reviewed the integration efforts surrounding new-generation equipment and innovations designed to bolster the combat effectiveness of the troops. As the largest formation within the Indian Army, the Spear Corps has a critical mandate to ensure security across a significant portion of the northeastern region, including Manipur. The Corps carries a rich historical legacy of involvement in counter-insurgency operations, notably against the Naga insurgency and during the pivotal 1962 Battle of Walong against China. Lt Gen Pendharkar, who took command in August 2024, brings a wealth of experience from his prior assignments in Jammu and Kashmir and along the Line of Control, particularly in counter-insurgency operations.
In addressing his troops, the Corps Commander praised their exemplary professionalism, dedication, and high morale. He reinforced the importance of their preparedness to confront future challenges in light of the volatile situation in Manipur. “The troops have demonstrated exceptional commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region. Their preparedness to meet any challenge is commendable,” he remarked, according to an official release from the Spear Corps.
