L3Harris Secures €1 Billion Deal with Dutch Defence for Advanced Falcon IV Radios

L3Harris has reached a significant milestone by signing a substantial 1 billion euro ($1.1 billion) agreement with the Dutch Ministry of Defence for the delivery of advanced Falcon IV radios. This strategic acquisition is part of the Netherlands’ efforts to enhance its military communication capabilities and establish better coordination with European and NATO armed forces.

The Falcon IV radio systems are renowned for enabling interoperability with more than one million tactical devices currently deployed around the globe. Sam Mehta, President of Communication Systems at L3Harris, emphasized the importance of these resilient devices, stating that they will significantly enhance homeland defense capabilities, deter regional conflicts, and directly support coalition and security cooperation initiatives.

The Falcon IV radio is designed as a dual-channel system, which ensures secure data transmission critical to military operations. Each channel operates independently, allowing for voice communication, intelligence sharing, and data transfer. Its advanced simultaneous crossbanding capability facilitates connectivity at various command levels, ensuring that operations can continue seamlessly even in challenging circumstances.

One of the standout features of the Falcon IV system is its extended wideband capability, which allows for rapid data transfer, including high-definition, full-motion video. This feature greatly enhances situational awareness on the battlefield, providing military personnel with vital information in real-time. The radio’s compatibility with multiple waveforms further expands its operational versatility, enabling both line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight communication across various environments.

The partnership with L3Harris is not new for the Netherlands, which has previously committed to multi-billion-dollar investments in radio systems to bolster its military capabilities. In October of the previous year, the U.S. government approved the potential sale of L3Harris portable radio equipment worth $1.42 billion to the Netherlands. This delivery included a range of advanced equipment, such as multiband networking manpack AN/PRC-117G radios, wideband networking handheld AN/PRC-152A radios, and wideband high- and very high-frequency manpack AN/PRC-160 radios.

Further solidifying this partnership, in 2023, the Dutch Ministry of Defense unveiled a comprehensive $2.7 billion plan aimed at equipping around 8,000 vehicles, 3,500 military personnel, 135 vessels, and 170 aircraft with the latest combat net radios produced by L3Harris. This significant investment underscores the Netherlands’ commitment to modernizing its military infrastructure and enhancing operational readiness in a rapidly evolving security landscape.
