US Air Force Receives First TPY-4 Radar from Lockheed Martin to Modernize Air Surveillance Capabilities

The US Air Force has officially received its first TPY-4 radar system from Lockheed Martin, marking a significant step in enhancing its air surveillance capabilities. This delivery follows the successful completion of initial phase testing, demonstrating the radar’s readiness for deployment within the service’s operational framework.

The TPY-4 radar is part of the Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long-Range Radar (3DELRR) program, which aims to modernize the Air Force’s air surveillance infrastructure by replacing its aging AN/TPS-75 radar systems. The US Air Force is set to acquire up to 35 TPY-4 radars, as outlined in an order placed in 2022.

Featuring 360-degree coverage, the TPY-4 is a fully digital, long-range, ground-based radar designed to detect and track a variety of aerial threats. Its capabilities extend to identifying tactical ballistic missiles, aircraft, low-flying targets, and small drones. Notably, the radar is engineered to operate effectively in extreme environmental conditions, making it a versatile asset for military operations.

The TPY-4 radar system is available in both fixed and mobile configurations, enhancing its deployment flexibility. It can be transported via various methods including C-130 and C-17 aircraft, helicopters, trucks, and rail systems, facilitating rapid movement to support mission requirements.

Rick Cordaro, Lockheed Martin’s Vice President of Radar and Sensor Systems, emphasized the importance of the TPY-4’s delivery, stating, “The successful completion of early phase testing and delivery of the first TPY-4 radar system underscores our dedication to providing the US Air Force with cutting-edge, high-performance systems that meet their evolving requirements and expectations.” He further noted that the 3DELRR program is crucial for global air surveillance and defense capabilities, which are vital for national security.

In addition to the US Air Force’s acquisition, Norway has become the first international customer for the TPY-4 radar, having ordered a total of 11 units—eight in 2022 and three more in September 2024. This move signals the growing interest in advanced radar technology among allied nations, further highlighting the TPY-4’s role in modern defense strategies.
