In a troubling incident highlighting the ongoing violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported a severe breach of safety at Kyeshero hospital in Goma. The charity accused the M23 armed group—allegedly backed by Rwanda—of orchestrating a deadly incursion on the night of April 4 to 5.
According to MSF, approximately 20 armed individuals stormed the hospital grounds, searching for individuals who had sought refuge there. This aggressive action unfolded just months after M23 forces seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, earlier this year.
The humanitarian organization’s statement detailed the harrowing events during the incursion, noting that MSF teams observed armed men firing weapons outside hospital wards. Tragically, the violence resulted in the death of one person and injuries to three others. Additionally, two hospital staff members reportedly suffered severe beatings during the attack. While the gunmen did not invade the actual hospital wards, stray bullets struck the interiors, exacerbating the fear and chaos in an already precarious environment.
Margot Grelet, MSF’s emergency coordinator for Goma and North Kivu, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “Such events are unacceptable and must never be repeated.” She emphasized the urgent need for protection for healthcare facilities and the personnel working within them, especially in regions plagued by conflict.
MSF’s statement also highlighted a disturbing trend, revealing that its teams have encountered around 15 violent incidents this year that directly impacted local hospitals. This alarming statistic underscores the detrimental effect of ongoing hostilities on medical services, which are critical for the affected populations.
Since 2021, the M23 group has expanded its control over significant portions of the DRC’s eastern provinces, including both North and South Kivu. Earlier this year, the group launched a swift offensive, capturing Goma and Bukavu, which has contributed to a worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is rich in mineral resources, which are crucial for global supply chains—particularly for lithium and cobalt used in electronic devices and electric vehicle batteries, alongside other precious metals like tantalum, tin, and gold. However, these valuable resources have also fueled multiple rebellions and ongoing instability, further complicating the lives of millions in the region.
As the situation continues to develop, the international community faces mounting pressure to address the violence and its humanitarian consequences in the DRC, particularly in safeguarding vulnerable populations seeking essential medical care.
