Army Commander Reviews Operational Readiness of Rising Star Corps in Jammu and Kashmir Amidst Increased Terror Threats

Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, the Army Commander of the Western Command, recently undertook a significant visit to the forward areas of Bani-Machhedi in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, where he conducted a thorough review of the operational preparedness of the Rising Star Corps. This visit is particularly noteworthy as it reflects the Indian Army’s continuous commitment to ensuring security and maintaining readiness in a region marked by escalating tensions and recent terrorist activities.

During the visit, Lt Gen Katiyar praised the troops for their exemplary steadfastness and professionalism in safeguarding the area. The Bani-Machhedi sector, strategically located near the Line of Control (LoC), has been a critical zone for counter-terrorism operations. This focus has intensified following a tragic ambush in July 2024, during which five army personnel lost their lives to an attack orchestrated by the Jaish-e-Mohammad-linked shadow group, Kashmir Tigers. The incident, taking place in the Machedi area of Kathua district, serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats from Pakistan-based terrorist organizations leveraging proxy groups to carry out their operations in the region.

In addition to assessing operational readiness, Lt Gen Katiyar paid his respects at the Veer Smriti war memorial in Chandimandir, a tradition he upholds to honor the sacrifices made by brave soldiers. This gesture highlights the Indian Army’s respect for its fallen heroes and reinforces the connection between current and past military endeavors.

The Western Command, in which the Rising Star Corps plays a crucial role, has been vigorously engaged in maintaining high operational standards. The corps collaborates closely with various security forces, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), to tackle insurgency and terrorism within the region effectively.

This visit coincides with ongoing efforts under Operation Rakshak, a comprehensive counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism initiative that has been in place since 1990, aiming to restore peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army is actively coordinating with other security forces to confront the challenges posed by militancy, particularly in the context of recent attacks that have threatened both military personnel and civilians alike, underscoring the complex security landscape in the region.
