General Dynamics has secured a substantial $728-million contract to supply the U.S. Army with an unspecified number of 120mm Insensitive Munition High Explosive – Tracer (IM HE-T) rounds. This award is part of an initiative to enhance the military’s combat capabilities, particularly in the realm of armored warfare.
Insensitive munitions, designed specifically to minimize risks associated with accidental detonation from external factors such as heat, shock, and impact, are also known as “safe munitions.” These rounds incorporate advanced materials and engineering features that ensure enhanced safety during various phases, including storage, transport, and combat operations.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced that the contract was awarded through a competitive solicitation process that ultimately attracted a single bid. Deliveries of the rounds are anticipated to be completed by the year 2030.
The 120mm IM HE-T round is specifically engineered to support main battle tank missions by delivering superior firepower against fortified positions like bunkers and lightly armored targets. It adds significant versatility and safety to the existing inventory of tank ammunition. Notably, the round is equipped with a dual-mode fuse, which allows for immediate detonation upon impact or a delayed detonation after penetrating its target.
With a weight of approximately 16 kilograms (35 pounds), this munition stands out for its precision, even at extended ranges. The introduction of the 120mm IM HE-T is expected to provide armored units with a more lethal and dependable ammunition choice, enabling them to support infantry effectively in high-risk environments while prioritizing safety.
