Lieutenant Commander Divya Sharma Becomes First Woman Qualified Flying Instructor in Indian Navy

In a significant advancement for gender inclusivity within the Indian Armed Forces, Lieutenant Commander Divya Sharma has made history by becoming the first woman Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) in the Indian Navy. Serving with the Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 318 at INS Utkrosh, her achievement is celebrated as a milestone not only for naval aviation but also for women officers across the tri-services, underscoring their increasing presence in vital operational and leadership roles.

This landmark announcement positions Lt Cdr Sharma in a prestigious role where she will be responsible for training and mentoring future Naval aviators, a duty typically reserved for the most skilled and experienced pilots.

Originating from Malviya Nagar in New Delhi, Lt Cdr Sharma was among the first three women operationalized as Dornier pilots by the Southern Naval Command in Kochi. During her participation in the 27th Dornier Operational Flying Training (DOFT) Course, she earned recognition as ‘First in Flying,’ showcasing her exceptional skills from the outset of her career.

In addition to her recent accomplishment, Lt Cdr Sharma was a key participant in a landmark all-women maritime surveillance mission conducted by INAS 318 on International Women’s Day 2024. This notable operation celebrated the 40th anniversary of the squadron and was remarkable for being executed entirely by women officers, encompassing roles in meteorology, air traffic control, and medical support. This mission highlighted the Indian Navy’s ongoing commitment to fostering gender neutrality and operational empowerment within its ranks.

INAS 318, based at INS Utkrosh in Port Blair and integral to the Andaman & Nicobar Command, operates Dornier aircraft for long-range maritime surveillance. Lt Cdr Sharma’s qualification as a QFI not only enhances the squadron’s operational capabilities but also serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring women in the armed forces.

As Lt Cdr Divya Sharma continues to make her mark, she not only redefines boundaries within military aviation but also mentors the next generation of female aviators, representing the Indian Navy’s progressive journey towards a more inclusive and capable force.
