L3Harris Signs $214 Million Deals with Germany for Advanced Communication Systems

L3Harris has entered into multiple agreements with the German government, totaling $214 million, aimed at enhancing the communication systems used by the German Armed Forces. This initiative will support the Bundeswehr as it embarks on its Digitalization – Land Based Operations (D-LBO) program, which is focused on modernizing command and control capabilities within the military.

Under this deal, L3Harris will provide the German military with reliable hardware and advanced technology designed to streamline operations and improve interoperability among NATO allies. The equipment supplied will incorporate robust waveform technology, which is essential for ensuring operational efficiency and facilitating coalition operations.

Among the key components expected to be included in the package are L3Harris’s Falcon high-speed handheld radios. These radios have a proven track record in the field, demonstrating their effectiveness in safeguarding both personnel and communication networks at the tactical edge. L3Harris Communications Systems President Sam Mehta expressed pride in supporting a NATO ally and highlighted the importance of their communication technologies in protecting soldiers.

The specific timeline for the delivery of these new communication systems has not yet been disclosed.

The D-LBO program is part of Germany’s broader initiative to revamp its military communication network. This effort includes integrating various IT systems and establishing training facilities to better implement updated capabilities across the army.

In a related move, German defense contractor Rheinmetall secured a contract earlier this year to supply the Bundeswehr with its Tactical Wide Area Network for Land Based Operations (TaWAN LBO) radio management system. This system aims to lessen the army’s dependence on satellite communications, with the delivery of 102 TaWAN LBO units scheduled to occur between 2026 and 2029.

Additionally, last year, Germany approved the acquisition of Striker II helmet-mounted displays for its fighter aircraft, a significant step toward enhancing pilot situational awareness and overall fleet survivability. This deal was estimated to cost approximately 63 million euros ($66.42 million), reflecting Germany’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities.
