Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore has emphasized the importance of cultivating deeper military and scientific ties with Russia during a recent visit to Moscow. The discussions took place at the Kremlin following a parade in Red Square that saw Traore joining various international leaders.
Traore, who leads Burkina Faso’s military-dominated government after seizing power in a coup in September 2022, acknowledged Russia’s ability to maintain a prominent position on the international stage despite facing widespread sanctions. “It’s a lesson for all of us,” he remarked, highlighting the advancements in the Russian military, particularly its “modernized” equipment.
During their meeting, Traore mentioned ongoing projects with the Russian defense ministry but refrained from providing specific details. His government has notably shifted its alliances, distancing itself from France, its former colonial ruler, and seeking closer cooperation with Russia.
Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the accompanying sanctions imposed on Russia, Traore clarified that he would not be requesting military aid at this time. Instead, he expressed interest in gaining “knowledge” from Russia and highlighted the importance of education for Burkina Faso’s youth, as well as the need for assistance in addressing the escalating jihadist violence in his country.
In response, President Vladimir Putin assured Traore of Russia’s commitment to assist Burkina Faso in combating radical groups and supporting the training of officials. Putin reiterated a shared objective: the fight against terrorism, while also advocating for enhanced economic collaboration between the two nations.
