In a significant development for international defense collaboration, the United Kingdom and Germany have announced plans to jointly create a cutting-edge “deep-precision strike” weapon with an impressive range exceeding 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles). While specific details regarding the capabilities of this weapon remain undisclosed, it is currently uncertain if it will be classified as a cruise missile or a ballistic missile.
The new long-range strike capability is slated for delivery in the 2030s, and it is expected to surpass the operational range of the current British Storm Shadow and German Taurus air-launched cruise missiles. The UK Ministry of Defence highlighted the intended purpose of this advanced system, stating that it aims to enhance national security and reinforce NATO deterrence, while simultaneously reinforcing the UK and European defense sectors.
This announcement comes on the heels of the signing of the Trinity House Agreement on Defence Co-operation last October. This landmark agreement was established in the context of rising security concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has heightened the focus on shared defense interests.
Among the initiatives stemming from this agreement is the procurement of new air-launched Sting Ray torpedoes, alongside an arrangement that will allow Germany to secure general support bridges through an existing UK contract.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the strengthening ties between the two nations, stating, “The UK and Germany have never been closer, and the Trinity House Agreement is already making a positive impact on our security and economy.” He further noted that this partnership is evolving defense into a robust driver of growth, generating jobs, enhancing skills, and stimulating investment in both countries.
