The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has officially approved the deployment of the “Krampus” mobile flamethrower, a sophisticated unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) developed locally for use by the armed forces. This innovative combat support system is designed with a compact structure and lightweight design, enabling quick transportation via a trailer or pickup truck.
The Krampus is equipped with advanced features, including video cameras that provide intelligence gathering and threat detection capabilities. Its primary offensive tool is the RPV-16 rocket-propelled thermobaric flamethrower, designed to target enemy personnel and light-armored vehicles effectively.
According to the defense ministry’s equipment division, the Krampus boasts a robust control module that ensures reliable connectivity in various weather conditions. The vehicle operates on dual electric motors that enhance its stealth capabilities while maintaining a low-noise profile. Additionally, its tracked chassis enables off-road maneuverability in diverse terrains, including sand, swamps, thick vegetation, and steep inclines.
The battery system of the land-based drone allows it to sustain operations for several hours, whether in continuous motion or on standby during missions. This enhances its operational versatility and effectiveness in the field.
With the introduction of the Krampus, the total number of combat support UGVs in the Ukrainian military has now reached 80, underscoring the increasing reliance on robotic systems in modern warfare. This recent addition follows the induction of approximately 10 domestically manufactured UGVs in 2023, with continued integration of additional units from the previous year.
In addition to the Krampus, other notable UGVs introduced in recent years include the “Spider” system, which has a logistics and engineering payload capacity of 50 kilograms (110 pounds), and the “Donkey” system, capable of transporting 200 kilograms (441 pounds) of equipment and towing vehicles equivalent in size to SUVs. This enhancement in UGV capabilities reflects the Ukrainian military’s commitment to modernizing its forces and employing innovative technologies in combat operations.
