L3Harris has secured a significant contract to enhance the surveillance capabilities of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) by providing advanced targeting systems for its fleet of P-8A maritime patrol aircraft. The agreement entails the delivery of 16 state-of-the-art WESCAM MX-20 units designed to support critical maritime and overland patrol missions, as well as reconnaissance activities.
This latest addition to the RCAF comes as the P-8As will form an integral part of Canada’s fleet alongside the MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, which are also equipped with WESCAM technology. Tom Kirkland, Vice President of Targeting and Sensor Systems at L3Harris, emphasized that integrating the advanced imaging technology with the P-8A aircraft positions Canada to capitalize on one of the most cutting-edge intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) solutions available. He noted the importance of reliable systems, particularly for maritime and national security operations, including those in challenging Arctic environments, stating that the WESCAM MX-20 plays a vital role in enhancing security across the country.
While specific delivery dates for the imaging systems have yet to be confirmed, the capabilities of the WESCAM MX-20 suggest a significant enhancement in the RCAF’s operational effectiveness. The MX-20 is equipped with both electro-optical and infrared cameras, providing real-time imaging capabilities for day and night operations. The system boasts long-range imaging features that allow for the identification and engagement of targets from distances exceeding 12.4 miles (20 kilometers), thanks to its large-aperture lenses and high-magnification sensors.
The deployment of the WESCAM MX-series surveillance systems has already made a considerable impact globally, with around 8,000 units delivered across more than 87 countries. Nations such as Australia, Chile, and France have already integrated the MX-20 into their military aviation assets, with the French Navy using the MX-20D variant on their Bréguet 1150 Atlantic maritime patrol aircraft. This partnership underscores the global trust in L3Harris technology as a critical component in modern defense and surveillance operations.
