In a transformative move aimed at bolstering the influence of Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks (ORs) within the Indian Army, Subedar Major Ojit Sahab from the 3 Assam Regiment has been appointed as the inaugural Command Subedar Major (Comd SM) of the Northern Command. This appointment represents a pivotal moment in the Army’s approach to institutional leadership and engagement with its personnel.
This newly established position was initiated following direct instructions from the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who mandated the creation of Command Subedar Major roles across all Army Commands, including at the COAS level. The initiative is inspired by the role of Senior Sergeant Major in Western militaries and aims to formalize a communication link between senior Army leadership and the JCOs and ORs, who constitute the operational backbone of the force.
In his capacity as Command Subedar Major, Ojit Sahab will function as an advisor to the Army Commander on issues pertinent to JCOs and ORs. This advisory role parallels that of the Colonel Military Secretary, who manages officer-related matters. Sahab’s contributions are anticipated to play a significant role in influencing policies, enhancing morale, setting training standards, and addressing personnel welfare from the grassroots level.
Moreover, the Command Subedar Major will actively participate in operational evaluations. He will accompany the Army Commander on inspections of units and formations, organizing focused sessions with JCOs and ORs to gain insights into on-ground situations and provide actionable feedback to higher command.
This strategic appointment is expected to foster a more robust trust and coordination framework between Army Headquarters and frontline units, particularly in the strategically vital areas under the Northern Command’s jurisdiction. It also reflects an increased acknowledgment of the essential roles played by JCOs and ORs in directing the Army’s future trajectory.
Subedar Major Ojit Sahab, recognized for his professionalism and extensive field experience, is seen as a fitting choice for this role. His groundbreaking appointment as the first Command Subedar Major is perceived as a historic advancement, potentially setting a new standard for military leadership models within the Indian Army.
