The US Navy has entered into a significant partnership with BAE Systems, granting the defense contractor a contract worth $30 million for the enhancement of the AN/APX-123A(V) common transponder technology utilized in Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) operations. This newly upgraded system is set to replace the current IFF transponders across a variety of military platforms, which include drones, ships, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters.
The upgraded transponder technology is expected to play a pivotal role in bolstering air defense capabilities, weapon systems operations, and air traffic control functions for the US Navy and joint military forces. The work on this project will take place at BAE Systems facilities located in New York and Texas, with the anticipated delivery of the upgraded systems slated for 2027.
Seth Guanu, the Combat Identification Products program area director at BAE Systems, emphasized the importance of the common transponders in providing reliable and secure solutions for military operations. He noted that these systems enable forces to effectively identify friendly units and make informed decisions in various threat scenarios. “The level of speed, security, and accuracy matters to support interoperability across US forces. This modernization effort enables us to deliver a critical capability to thousands of existing applications and equip emerging platforms,” Guanu stated.
This contract marks a continuation of BAE Systems’ commitment to supporting essential US Navy projects, following a series of recent agreements. Just earlier this month, the company was selected to provide vital support and integration services for the Sea-Launched Cruise Missile-Nuclear program. Earlier in January, BAE secured a $70 million contract to upgrade the US Navy’s Mk 45 5-inch naval gun systems to the Mod 4 standard. Moreover, in October 2024, the defense firm was awarded a substantial $92 million contract to continue producing propulsors for Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
The latest contract for the common transponder technology underscores the Navy’s ongoing efforts to modernize its capabilities and enhance operational efficiency in an evolving defense landscape. As military engagements become increasingly complex, the advancements provided by BAE Systems are anticipated to significantly enhance situational awareness and operational readiness for US forces.
