Italian Air Force Inducts Leonardo-Made M-345 Jet Trainer Into Fleet

The Italian Air Force has officially inducted the Leonardo-made M-345 jet into its fleet of trainer aircraft, marking a significant advancement in its pilot training capabilities. The M-345 is tailored to support both the basic and advanced phases of military pilot training, ensuring that aspiring aviators are well-prepared to operate new-generation fighter jets.

Equipped with state-of-the-art digital avionics and a sophisticated human-machine interface, the M-345 aims to meet contemporary training requirements. Leonardo has emphasized that with the integration of the M-345 into the Armed Force’s training syllabus, the Italian Air Force will possess the most modern fixed-wing military training system in Europe.

The M-345 is a light jet trainer featuring a robust Williams FJ44-4M-34 turbofan engine, which provides the necessary power and performance for comprehensive training. The aircraft’s cockpit is equipped with a digital system that includes three color touchscreens and a Head-Up Display, enhancing situational awareness for the pilots. Additionally, its innovative design incorporates stepped tandem seating, allowing instructors and students to communicate easily, while controls are optimized for a hands-on flying experience.

In terms of specifications, the M-345 measures 9.8 meters (32.3 feet) in length with a wingspan of 8.4 meters (27.8 feet). The aircraft can operate at a maximum altitude of 12,192 meters (40,000 feet) and achieves impressive speeds, reaching up to 704 kilometers (437 miles) per hour at sea level and 787 kilometers (489 miles) per hour at 6,096 meters (20,000 feet).

Part of an integrated training system, the M-345 combines live flight training with advanced simulation tools. This includes cutting-edge simulators and ground-based devices that work in tandem with real aircraft, allowing for a versatile training environment. By merging live and virtual elements, pilots and instructors can engage in complex, realistic scenarios that enhance the training experience, ultimately better equipping the next generation of military pilots.
