Portugal Plans to Acquire Sixth KC-390 Millennium for Military Aerial Transport Modernization

Portugal has announced plans to acquire a sixth KC-390 Millennium aircraft from the Brazilian defense contractor Embraer, furthering its efforts to modernize its military aerial transport capabilities. This decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance the Portuguese Air Force’s operational fleet, which currently relies on aging C-130 Hercules cargo planes.

This latest procurement builds on a previous agreement made in 2019 between Lisbon and Embraer, marking a significant step in the country’s military modernization efforts. Alongside the sixth unit, Portugal is also seeking options for an additional ten aircraft, aiming to bolster its negotiations with NATO allies and other European partners for future collaborations.

Currently, Portugal operates two KC-390s, with the first aircraft delivered in 2022 and the second following in 2024. The acquisition of a sixth unit represents a milestone, as Portugal will be the first operator to expand its order of the KC-390, highlighting the aircraft’s operational success and quality.

Embraer CEO Bosco da Costa Jr. expressed enthusiasm over the new order, noting that the additional purchase underscores the aircraft’s proven capabilities. He suggested that this interest from Portugal may pave the way for additional Western nations to consider joining the group of KC-390 operators, thereby capitalizing on shared economic advantages throughout the aircraft’s lifecycle.

The KC-390 Millennium itself boasts impressive specifications, measuring 35 meters (115 feet) in length with a payload capacity of 26,000 kilograms (57,320 pounds) or the ability to transport up to 80 personnel. Additionally, it can carry a substantial 35,000 kilograms (77,162 pounds) of fuel. The aircraft is powered by twin IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines, enhancing its performance capabilities.

Designed for versatility, the KC-390 is equipped with an electronic warfare suite, self-protection systems, and countermeasures to defend against airborne missile threats. It can travel at speeds exceeding 500 knots (approximately 926 kilometers or 575 miles per hour), achieve a range of 4,570 nautical miles (8,464 kilometers or 5,259 miles), and operate at a service ceiling of 11,000 meters (36,089 feet).

As Portugal takes further steps to modernize its military transport capabilities, the KC-390 Millennium stands to play a significant role in enhancing the country’s defense and operational readiness.
