Airbus Secures NATO Contract for Two Additional A330 MRTT Aircraft

Airbus has recently finalized a significant contract to deliver two additional A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft to NATO, with scheduled deliveries anticipated in 2028 and 2029. This expansion will enhance NATO’s aerial refueling and cargo capabilities, bringing the alliance’s MRTT fleet to a total of 12 aircraft.

The announcement coincides with the formal inclusion of Sweden and Denmark into NATO’s Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) program. This initiative, administered by NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency, aims to consolidate and distribute heavy airlift resources among participating nations. With the integration of these two countries, the MMF program now comprises eight member nations, each with operational rights to the fleet.

Airbus has confirmed that the production and necessary modifications for the new A330s will take place at its facilities in Toulouse, France, and Getafe, Spain. Jean-Brice Dumont, the head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space, remarked, “The expansion of the Multinational MRTT Fleet with two additional aircraft and the addition of Sweden and Denmark to the program underscores Europe’s commitment to collective defense and strategic autonomy.” He highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative, stating, “This collaboration exemplifies how European industry can respond effectively to evolving security challenges through innovation and cooperation.”

The A330 MRTT is built on the A330 airframe, which measures 59 meters (194 feet) in length and has a wingspan of 60 meters (197 feet). The aircraft is designed with a substantial payload capacity of up to 45,000 kilograms (99,208 pounds) and can accommodate up to 290 passengers. Additionally, it features a fuel capacity of 111,000 kilograms (244,713 pounds), making it well-suited for various operational needs.

Depending on the designated operator, the A330 MRTT can be powered by either two Rolls-Royce Trent 772B engines, two General Electric CF6-80E1 engines, or two Pratt & Whitney PW4170 engines, with engine outputs ranging from approximately 340,000 to 360,000 horsepower. The aircraft is capable of flying a range of 8,000 nautical miles (14,816 kilometers), reaching operational altitudes of up to 13,000 meters (42,651 feet), and achieving a maximum speed of 475 knots (880 kilometers/547 miles per hour).

NATO’s acquisition of the new A330 Multirole Tanker Transport aircraft symbolizes a strengthened commitment to enhancing aerial capabilities and cooperative defense among its member nations.
