FN America has secured a significant $4.9 million contract to supply its advanced M240L lightweight medium machine guns to the United States Army. This agreement enhances the Army’s arsenal, building on the integration of the NATO-standard weapon into the service since 2010, which was part of a broader initiative aimed at creating a lighter yet more robust firearm for military personnel.
The M240L machine gun showcases an impressive 18 percent reduction in weight compared to its predecessor, the M240B. This modern firearm retains the range and firepower capabilities that troops rely on, while being designed with a titanium structure that decreases its weight by roughly 5 pounds (or 2.2 kilograms).
The roots of the M240L can be traced back to the FN MAG 58 general-purpose machine gun, which has been in operation within the US military since the 1970s. This lineage serves as the foundation for the entire M240 family, combining historical effectiveness with contemporary engineering advancements.
Key features of the M240L include its open bolt firing mechanism, which minimizes heat buildup, and an efficient quick-change barrel configuration. With a barrel length measuring 21.7 inches (55 centimeters) and an overall length of 48.5 inches (123 centimeters), the M240L is designed for user adaptability and ease of use in various combat situations. It is capable of firing up to 650 rounds per minute, achieving a muzzle velocity of approximately 2,800 feet (853 meters) per second and boasts a maximum effective firing range of around 3,700 meters (12,139 feet).
Mark Cherpes, CEO and president of FN America, commented on the partnership, stating, “The M240L continues the collaborative effort between FN, the US Army and the individual soldier to provide the most effective weapon systems for the warfighter.” He highlighted the innovative materials and manufacturing techniques introduced during its development, which pave the way for future advancements in military equipment. Cherpes expressed pride in the M240L and eagerness to fulfill the demands of the contract, reinforcing FN America’s commitment to supporting the US Army.
