Sweden Orders 22 Combat Boats from Saab Worth $94 Million

Saab has announced a substantial order from the Swedish government for the acquisition of 22 combat boats, valued at approximately 900 million Swedish kronor, or about $94 million. The manufacturing of these advanced vessels will take place at Saab’s Docksta shipyard, with deliveries expected to occur over the next few years.

The combat boat in question, known as the CB90HSM, represents the latest iteration of Saab’s renowned CB90 platform. This model has been specifically engineered to enhance speed, maneuverability, firepower, and situational awareness, making it a significant asset for modern naval operations.

This recent order follows a previous one placed in June 2024, when Sweden committed to acquiring 10 next-generation combat boats for $38 million. Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s business area Kockums, emphasized the importance of this latest contract, stating, “This order represents a significant addition to Sweden’s naval capabilities. We are proud that Saab’s combat boats continue to contribute to Sweden’s defense.”

The CB90HSM is constructed entirely of aluminum, tailored for high-speed operations while effectively transporting troops and equipment. Notably, its design allows for stability and agility under challenging conditions. The vessel spans 16.3 meters (53.5 feet) in overall length, while the hull measures 14.9 meters. With a draft of just 0.9 meters (3 feet), the CB90HSM is optimized for operations in shallow coastal waters.

When fully loaded, the combat boat can reach speeds in excess of 40 knots (approximately 46 miles or 74 kilometers per hour), with a cruising speed of 38 knots (about 43 miles or 70 kilometers per hour). Its operational range extends up to 300 nautical miles (345 miles or 555 kilometers), enabling it to undertake extended patrols and rapid-response missions effectively.

The vessel is equipped with a state-of-the-art combat management system, along with advanced surveillance sensors, enhancing its operational capabilities. Additionally, the platform can accommodate various weapon systems, including stabilized turntables and small missile systems, and it features Saab’s Trackfire remote weapon station, which enhances targeting and engagement capabilities.

For crew safety, the CB90HSM is designed with ballistic shielding that includes polyethylene lining and reinforced safety glass, ensuring high levels of protection in various operational scenarios. This strategic investment in maritime defense not only strengthens Sweden’s naval forces but also signifies Saab’s commitment to providing advanced military solutions globally.
