US Army Advances Precision Strike Missile Program to Production and Deployment

The US Army has officially initiated the production and deployment phase of its Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) program, marking a significant milestone in the enhancement of its long-range strike capabilities. This move is part of a broader strategy to counter evolving threats by replacing the older Army Tactical Missile System with a more advanced next-generation warhead.

This decision comes after receiving “Milestone C” approval, which allows for critical assembly processes before the system is fielded across various artillery formations. The PrSM program aims to equip warfighters with tools to suppress or eliminate enemy assets that inhibit allied operations, particularly in contested environments.

The new missile is designed to achieve an impressive range of over 400 kilometers (approximately 249 miles) and holds potential for further modifications to extend its reach for specific missions in the future. The enhanced precision and ability for “deep strikes” are expected to improve the targeting accuracy of high-value adversarial assets, which is vital for achieving dominance on the battlefield.

Maj. Gen. Frank Lozano, the US Army Missiles and Space Program Executive Officer, commented on the significance of this development, emphasizing the concerted efforts of the PrSM team. He stated, “PrSM will provide our Soldiers with a critical capability to engage and defeat threats at extended ranges, enhancing our ability to deter aggression and protect our national security.”

Recent advancements in the PrSM program have been bolstered by a lucrative $4.9 billion contract awarded to Lockheed Martin, the company responsible for supplying the precision missile system. This contract extends until 2029 and encompasses orders for more than 1,200 missiles, ensuring a steady supply for the Army’s needs.

Earlier this year, the Army conducted successful fire tests of the PrSM using the M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System in New Mexico. These trials not only demonstrated the missile’s efficacy but also its compatibility with other existing platforms, such as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

As the US Army fortifies its artillery capabilities through the PrSM program, the focus on long-range precision strike capabilities underscores a commitment to adapting to dynamic global threats and enhancing national security.
