The UK and France have announced a significant step in their defense strategy, declaring that while their nuclear deterrents remain independent, they can be coordinated in response to extreme threats facing Europe. This declaration, set to be signed on Thursday, emphasizes the independent control of both nations’ nuclear capabilities while highlighting a shared commitment to respond collectively to serious threats.
The upcoming agreement will be formalized during French President Emmanuel Macron’s three-day state visit to the UK, culminating in a bilateral summit with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This summit aims to revitalize defense ties, focusing particularly on joint missile development and nuclear cooperation.
Starmer and Macron are expected to discuss various critical issues, including ongoing support for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia and strategies to address undocumented cross-Channel immigration. The fortification of the defense relationship promises to refresh existing collaborations between the two nations.
As part of their renewed cooperation, the UK and France will order additional Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Known as SCALP in France, these long-range, air-launched weapons have been crucial to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Plans for developing a replacement missile system are also underway, further solidifying the collaborative defense framework.
The Ministry of Defense described this evolving partnership as a new “Entente Industrielle,” which positions defense as a key driver of economic growth for both countries. Starmer highlighted the deep historical ties between the UK and France regarding defense collaboration, asserting that the new agreements elevate their partnership to unprecedented levels.
Additionally, both leaders are scheduled to participate in a meeting of the “coalition of the willing”—a coalition of nations united in their support for Ukraine. This demonstrates a continued commitment to international security and cooperative defense efforts amid global challenges.
