An intense encounter unfolded in the Hadal Gal area of Kishtwar as part of “Operation Cherji,” initiated by the Indian Army in response to specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the region. This operation is a critical component of heightened counter-terrorism measures being implemented across the Jammu area, particularly south of the Pir Panjal range.
The White Knight Corps of the Army confirmed the engagement through a social media update, indicating that contact had been made with the terrorists and that operations were ongoing. This heightened military activity follows the tragic April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including numerous tourists, compelling security forces to intensify their efforts against terror networks in the region.
According to officials, the group of 2 to 3 terrorists engaged in the Kishtwar encounter might be connected to previous attacks, including the murders of a Village Defence Guard (VDG) and an Army soldier in separate incidents. Security forces have been actively attempting to track this group since 2024, recently narrowing down their whereabouts utilizing night-vision capabilities and specialized terrain tracking techniques.
This ongoing operation is particularly significant in the context of the June 26 elimination of a top Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammad commander, known as Haider or Maulvi, in Udhampur’s Dudu-Basantgarh area. Following his death, associates who managed to escape are suspected of taking refuge in the dense forest areas, including Hadal Gal.
Local police are assisting security forces in the round-the-clock searches, with senior officials overseeing the operation closely. The region’s rugged landscape and thick vegetation present logistical challenges, yet they also highlight the strategic importance of engaging in such operations to secure the area.
As the encounter continues, no casualties have been reported thus far. The Army remains steadfast in its commitment to eliminate residual threats and restore enduring security in the Jammu division.
