India is collaborating with a French aerospace firm to develop and manufacture fighter jet engines domestically, as announced by the country’s Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh. This initiative is part of a broader push to enhance India’s indigenous defense capabilities, particularly exemplified by the recently approved prototype of a fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
Speaking at a conference in New Delhi, Singh detailed ongoing efforts to advance aircraft engine production within the country, highlighting the strategic importance of reducing reliance on foreign technology. “We are moving forward to manufacture aircraft engines in India itself,” he stated, confirming collaboration with a French company, widely reported to be Safran, known for its longstanding presence in India’s aviation and defense sectors. However, official confirmation from the company has not yet been provided.
As one of the largest arms importers globally, India is prioritizing the modernization of its military forces and is committed to boosting local arms production. This strategic shift has been bolstered by strengthened military cooperation with Western nations, especially through alliances like the Quad, which includes the United States, Japan, and Australia.
In April, India clinched a multi-billion-dollar deal for 26 Rafale fighter jets from Dassault Aviation, enhancing its existing fleet of 36 Rafale fighters. This acquisition aims to replace aging Russian MiG-29K jets and signifies India’s commitment to diversifying its defense procurement sources.
Singh has also pledged to allocate at least $100 billion for new domestic military hardware contracts by 2033 to stimulate the local defense industry. In recent years, India has made significant strides in its defense manufacturing capabilities, opening a modern helicopter facility, launching its first domestically produced aircraft carrier, and successfully testing long-range hypersonic missiles.
Facing a complex security environment characterized by threats from neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan, India remains vigilant. Tensions flared recently, leading to a four-day conflict that marked one of the most intense standoffs since 1999. This backdrop underscores the urgency of India’s ongoing defense modernization efforts and its ambitions to emerge as a self-reliant military power.
